At Animal Medical Center in Lubbock, TX, we use state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to help diagnose and monitor a wide range of health conditions in pets. Our experienced and compassionate veterinary team is dedicated to providing accurate diagnostics and gentle care to ensure your pet receives the best possible treatment plan.
Ultrasound is one of the most effective and noninvasive tools available in modern veterinary medicine, allowing our veterinarians to look inside your pet’s body in real time—without surgery or radiation.

What Is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create detailed images of your pet’s internal organs. During the procedure, a handheld probe (called a transducer) is gently moved across your pet’s skin. The probe emits sound waves that bounce off internal structures, and a computer converts these echoes into moving images on a screen.
Unlike x-rays, ultrasound imaging does not use radiation, making it a safe and painless diagnostic option for pets of all ages.
At Animal Medical Center, our veterinarians are specially trained and certified in veterinary sonography, allowing us to provide accurate results and precise diagnoses for your pet’s health concerns.
Why Your Pet Might Need an Ultrasound
Veterinary ultrasound is a powerful diagnostic tool used to evaluate a variety of conditions that may not be detectable during a physical exam or with x-rays alone. Your veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound for:
Evaluating internal organs, including the liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen, and pancreas
Detecting tumors, cysts, or other abnormal growths
Confirming and monitoring pregnancy
Assessing heart function through an echocardiogram (a specialized cardiac ultrasound)
Guiding biopsies for more accurate sample collection
Diagnosing abdominal conditions, such as obstructions or fluid buildup
Ultrasound allows us to visualize soft tissue structures clearly, helping us make faster, more informed treatment decisions for your pet’s care.
What to Expect During Your Pet’s Ultrasound
Before the procedure, we may ask you to withhold food or water for several hours—depending on the area being examined. For bladder ultrasounds, you may be asked to prevent your pet from urinating before the appointment to ensure the bladder is full and easier to evaluate.
In most cases, a small area of your pet’s fur will be shaved to allow the ultrasound probe to make full contact with the skin. Our team takes care to keep this area as small and discreet as possible.
Ultrasound is typically quick, gentle, and well-tolerated. Sedation is not usually necessary unless your pet is anxious or if a biopsy is required. If anesthesia is needed, our veterinarians will discuss the process with you beforehand to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort.
