Spay and Neuter for Kittens

As a responsible pet owner, spaying or neutering your kitten is something that is important to consider. These procedures are not only important in preventing pregnancies, but also in keeping your kitten healthy. At Animal Medical Center in Lubbock, TX, our veterinarian provides spay and neuter services and will guide you through the process. The first step is bringing your kitten in as early as possible for a pet exam.

Female Kittens

Female kittens should be spayed to protect their health. Spaying includes removing the ovaries and uterus. There are many benefits to spaying your pet. Your female cat will live a longer and healthier life if you opt to have her spayed. Spaying means your female kitten will have fewer uterine infections and is less likely to develop breast tumors and ovarian cancer.

During the breeding season, female cats can go into heat multiple times, and they can get very noisy and urinate more frequently. Spaying prevents this and saves you from any unwanted pregnancies. Female kittens can be spayed as early as 8 weeks of age. Our veterinarian will guide you on when your kitten should have the procedure.

Male Kittens

Neutering a male cat refers to removing the testicles. Neutering your kitten eliminates the danger of testicular cancer. Your cat will be less likely to feel the need to mark his territory in your home. When a male cat becomes aware of a female cat in heat anywhere in the vicinity, he will try to get outside and impregnate that female. Neutering prevents your kitten from wandering.

These procedures are routine and safe. They require general anesthesia. Your kitten will need a week on average to recover after the surgery. You should bring your kitten in for a pet exam to ensure that it is healing correctly.
